These humorous and beautifully illustrated books quickly became class favorites and they have already been read numerous times. The Snowmen books had us all thinking about what snowmen really do when we are not around. Why do our snowmen often look so droopy the day after we build them? What story did they have to tell? Our kindergarten author and illustrators were left wondering what their snowmen might be up to when given a chance to play at night!
The book Snowmen at Night became the catalyst and inspiration for our very own class book about our snowmen adventures. Using dark blue paper, the children used white crayons to illustrate their ideas. Some snowmen played snow baseball, or dress-up, or even karate. Our kindergartners are quite the creative bunch. Then using kidwriting, the children shared their ideas by writing the text for their book page. One kindergarten friend then independently decided to create a colorful book cover for all of the book pages, using the original books as models.
Literature helps children to learn new vocabulary, explore a variety of writing styles, introduce authors and illustrators, and learn about characters, settings and other parts of a story. Often books can become springboards, inspiring young authors and illustrators to create their own versions of the original book just as our class has done here.
Below are a few of the pages of our completed classroom book. Be sure to see the final "published" version in our classroom library!
