Recently, second graders have been enjoying poetry. We read
a few seasonal examples and learned different poetry tools. We looked at the use of rhyme,
repetition, shape, personification, punctuation, onomatopoeia and alliteration. We developed a system of coding to identify these elements as we read.
We also have written some poetry, inspired by our bird
studies. We learned about the
traditional forms of haiku and lune, which are based on sound or syllable
patterns. Writing this type of
poetry requires the poets to think about the words they use and to choose those
that best create the visual image desired. We also exercised phonetic skills to
sound out and count the syllables.
Here are the examples we wrote as a class.
Haiku (5/7/5)
Over the treetops
So many birds are flying
They cover the sky
Lune (5/3/5)
Over the treetops
Through the pond
Now they disappear
Be sure to check out the individual works displayed outside
the classroom!
