As we prepared for our annual gingerbread house festivities before
the break, the children were delighted to hear Jan Brett’s book, The Gingerbread Baby. Today, we read, The Gingerbread Boy by Richard Egielski . We compared the two stories
using a Venn Diagram. The chart
provided a wonderful visual of the students’ responses as we found similarities
and differences in characters, setting, and plot.
The Venn Diagram is a marvelous tool for incorporating math
and literacy skills in a single lesson.
It helps with sorting and categorizing, using descriptive vocabulary to
explain differences and similarities, and as we did today, we used the terms
character, setting and plot, to think about the properties of a story. Ask your child about the two books. How were they different and how were
they alike?
We will use the Venn Diagram in future lessons as we compare
and contrast with numbers, literacy, and science content.
Venn is a type of graphic organizer which consists of overlapping circles. Some even refer to it as the Overlapping Circles Chart. Now, how easy is it to draw circles? Drawing circles is not real easy, it gets even harder when you have to keep re-drawing them large enough to accommodate text that fill in the circles and intersecting areas. But, we’ve got an amazing solution – an online Venn Diagram Maker
