La música y las formas en el jardín de infancia / Music and Shapes in Kindergarten

In my continuous commitment to connect the Spanish languageto their current theme of study, I have combined the Kindergarten’s study of instrumentos musicales (musical instruments) and formas geométricas (geometric shapes).

During classes before our winter break, we played a game we called Formas Musicales (musical shapes) which is a spin-off of the traditional game “Musical Chairs”. In this fun and engaging game it was encouraged that the participants would work together rather than by themselves. The Kindergarteners were split into three groups. Music would be played, and then stopped. A geometric shape would be called out in Spanish and each team worked together to create the shape mentioned. What fun! In my opinion, every group was a winner as each team worked very cooperatively to make the stated shape.

This was a fun engaging game to reinforce the Spanish vocabulary for basic geometric shapes as well as an introduction to a variety of Spanish style music. The tunes used in this game were a selection of musical genres generated from Latin countries such as salsamerengue, and tango. The Kindergarteners had a fabulous time playing this game. Make sure to ask them all about it.
