Exploring Texture in Art

Throughout the art curriculum, students engage in an exploration of the different elements and principles of art. Both the kindergarten and first grade classes have embarked on a focused study of texture in art.

The first grade students took time to observe natural objects with a variety of textures. They translated what they observed through drawing, using a variety of lines and marks to convey texture. In a later class, they created imaginative paintings using white lines of paint to describe textures in a given environment. The first graders then completed their scenes with different colors of paint.

The kindergarteners also observed texture in the art room by embarking on a texture hunt, using crayon rubbings to reveal the texture of different objects and surfaces in the room. As a group, each student got the chance to feel an object in a 'mystery bag' and describe its texture using a word before revealing what it was! The kindergarteners were introduced to printmaking after creating 'secret message' pictures that did not utilize line or color, but were created using different textured collage items. When they applied printing ink to their pictures their full image was revealed and a print was created.

By revisiting concepts in art throughout different grade levels, students have the opportunity to expand their understanding, reinforce prior knowledge and create new connections in their own artwork and artwork in the larger world.
