Animals, Animals in Kindergarten

Our recent kindergarten animal play and trip to the Philadelphia Zoo have been wonderful inspirations for the animal research projects now underway. Our class is very concerned about the animals that are endangered and were insistent that was the direction our animal study would take! The children have selected an endangered animal to study and have begun gathering research, drawings and photos. The animals chosen range from birds, sea creatures, to land animals- some with names we had never heard of before! The class then brainstormed a large list of questions that they felt were important to investigate, and then carefully whittled the list down to the questions they felt were most pressing.
  • What does it look like?
  • Where does it live?
  • What does it eat?
  • How many babies does it have?
  • How long does it live?
  • Why is it endangered?
  • How can we help it?
Each child has already become an in-class expert about their specific animal! Using kid writing, the kindergarteners will answer the research questions and compile their information, authoring and illustrating individual endangered animal books.
