A Misty Day at the Arboretum

Kindergarten decided to brave the rain and head off on our trip to the Morris Arboretum on Monday despite the heavy downpours all morning, and we were richly rewarded!  The rain slowed to a fine mist, and we were able to be a outside for part of our lesson. Then afterward, we had a great time visiting the Summer Palaces created by Patrick Dougherty. Plus, we got to use our umbrellas!  That was a highlight in and of itself!!

Our maple sugaring trip primed us for many of the concepts that were shared at the Arboretum about tree structure and how different parts of the tree function.  We played Tree Jeopardy and every student planted a Yellow Birch sprout to bring home.  We saw lots of worms and birds during our lesson and explored a rotting tree, hoping we might see some bugs, but they were hiding out from the wetness.

The magnolias were magnificent and the Wissahickon Creek was filled to the brim and racing through the arboretum.  We were all thrilled to be there exploring the stick sculptures and the beautiful grounds. As the children announced at the introduction to our day, "This is a GREAT day because we are on a field trip, and we get to go outside!" Not to mention, "The rain helps the trees and the animals!!" What a day!!
