Time to Type

Our second, third and fourth graders have begun their adventures in typing. We are using a new program, Typing Agent. All students are beginning with the first lesson, and then are leveled to be developmentally appropriate. In addition to the lessons, students have access to games and an avatar. In the coming weeks, we will be requesting students do some typing practice at home. Fourth grade will be asked to do thirty minutes a week, third grade twenty minutes, and second grade ten minutes. The student are welcome to use the time playing the games, as we will cover the lessons in class. Please note that one game allows the students to play against a member of their class. They can only play against Abington Friends' students because this is a closed program and not open to strangers.

I am asking that parents check in with their children to make sure they are using good typing posture. This means that they are using all eight of their fingers with their thumbs resting on or near the space bar.  If you see your child's fingers have strayed around the keyboard, help them to reposition their fingers on the home row. Please do not let them type with two fingers, even if they are playing games.
Home Row

I will send home a card  on Friday with your child's username and password as well a parent card, so you can track your child's progress.  I appreciate all of your help as we nurture your child through a skill that will serve them throughout their lifetime. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at mpodulka@abingtonfriends.net.
