Abington Friends School Riparian Buffer!

It was a glorious day for tree planting!  The entire Lower School took part in helping to plant what is more than three hundred shrubs and trees spanning more than half the length of our creek.  Student voices echoed throughout the campus as they sang about riparian buffers guided by Jason and Aedín. Meticulous observational drawings were done, and all dug their hands into the cool, moist soil to help plant trees.

Students have been learning about the importance of native species of plants and how riparian buffers function to protect creeks like ours.  The work leading up to the project is a true example of service learning.  Students participated in a real world project about which they had done research.  Our students' efforts will have a tremendous impact on our community and the Jenkintown Creek for years to come.  On Saturday, we welcomed community members, Meeting members and AFS families to help complete the project. Many thanks to Rosanne and the AFS Outside Committee for making such an incredible project possible! Pictures can only partly convey the joy and enthusiasm that made Friday, October 17th so special.
