All About Birds

Second grade is all about birds lately!  Our avian awareness is increasing daily, from today’s wonderful trip to Rushton Woods and our visit with four birds from The Academy of Natural Sciences a few weeks ago, to making observations around our school campus or through our classroom windows.

In the classroom, students started looking at our collection of books, to learn about the wide variety of birds. We have quite a selection!

During book group, the students have been reading about penguins. As they read, they are looking for information about diet, habitat, community, communication and appearance, as well as gathering any other facts that they find interesting.

Next week students will start their individual bird research projects. After choosing a species, they will use books as an initial source and collect notes about specific aspects of their bird’s life. There will be a homework assignment to find pictures using internet resources to complement this research.  Look for the culmination of this research in the form of a poster in a few weeks.

Our current read aloud book is Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat.   This autobiographical book, set in Saskatchewan in Canada, tells the often humorous story of the author’s two pet owls, Wol and Weeps.  Ask your child to tell you a bit more about the interesting adventures Billy has with his two winged friends!
Next, we will read For the Birds by Margaret Atwood, which combines fantasy with factual information about birds and environmental issues.
