October in Lower School

October is a month of change in so many ways.  The leaves turn colors and create a crunchy carpet beneath our feet. Sweaters emerge from the depths of the closet as temperatures dip into the 50's, and adults debate exactly when the heat should be turned on. Students are changing too.  October is when school truly finds its rhythm.   Students have a sense of ownership and purpose in their classrooms. They have begun to master routines and expectations that seemed new and unfamiliar in the first weeks of September.

There has been much to celebrate already this year.  Kindergarten explored the fruits of autumn at an orchard and returned with bags of apples, pumpkins and gourds. Monarchs have hatched in first grade. Second grade teddy bears are holding court in the hallway outside the library. Third grade is carefully tracking the moon's phases in preparation for a mid-autumn festival, and fourth grade has begun construction an amazing wigwam.

Upcoming events include Field Day.  We will gather as a whole school on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 for games on Smith Field.  The day after Field Day, students will have a break from school as teachers spend Friday at an education conference hosted by the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools. Next week, fourth grade looks forward to the annual Shore Trip.  For more than 30 years, 4th graders have had the opportunity to spend a night at the shore where they learn more about aquatic life, art and nature and spend time honoring the importance of community and working together.  The third week of October is one of great anticipation. We will welcome authors for our Book Fair to be held October 16-18. The extended community will join us for tree planting and a celebration of nature along the edge of our creek on the morning of Saturday, October 18 as we work to create a better stream environment.

With Halloween approaching, students have begun developing themed costumes in grades K - 2, and older students have begun planning what they will wear as part of our Halloween parade to be held on the morning of October 31. Grades K and older will parade around the circle in front of the Faulkner Library. Our younger friends will be decorating special t-shirts in preparation for the fun they will have at the Harvest Festival.  The Harvest Festival is for K students and younger and will occur the morning of the 31st.
