Writing with a Purpose

At this time of year, the Development Office sends off care packages to the college freshmen. A note from their former first grade pages can help ease homesickness, midterm stress and remind them they are still part of the AFS community.

Second graders used their letter writing skills to reconnect with last year’s graduates. Writing to their partners brought back memories of shared experiences. Our students who are new to AFS this year had the choice of writing to a recent graduate or to a family member.

The students also used their letter writing skills to thank families for recent book donations made to the classroom during the Book Fair.  In small groups, they cooperatively composed thank you letters.

Writing with a purpose, such as letter writing, gives students an increased sense of value and pride in their work.  With letter writing, students have a clear sense of their audience and the importance of clear communication skills.

We delivered the letters to Tyson House.
