Our music study in kindergarten is really hitting the high notes!! We had the pleasure of hearing Aedin share several pieces of opera with us. And more than a few eyes widened when the children heard her beautiful, radiant voice. Aedin was accompanied on the piano by Jayne Swank, our Upper/Middle School Choral Teacher. We learned that opera is very much like a story or play performed musically. When we were outside for recess, several children were so impressed that they decided to do some opera singing of their own. It was such a joy to see this carryover!
Last week, we were delighted to learn about the violoncello (the real name for a cello!) from our strings teacher, Franklin. We learned some new musical terms, piano and forte, and had a chance to practice them with Franklin as he played - ask your child what they mean. When asked how often he had to practice, Franklin replied, "Only the days that I eat!" We are learning that every kind of music takes a great deal of practice and that you never stop learning!!
Today, Uncle "B" "O" "O," Boo's (as he is affectionately named by one of our kindergartners) funk/rock band, Dynamo, from Nashville, played for us and many teachers in the Extended Day Room. Everyone enjoyed the catchy rhythms and unique sounds. As each new song was played the children couldn't hold still and took to the floor for some fancy steps and twirls and just fun dancing!! Each musician and his instrument were introduced to the children before the performance began and we had a chance to ask questions afterward. As one student remarked, "They were EPIC!" It was a fantastic afternoon that brought the spirit of music to life in another remarkable way!
Tomorrow, we are off to learn how pianos are made! Stay tuned!!
