LittleBits - an exciting new STEM project!

Introducing LittleBits!

There's an exciting new program in 3rd grade science.  Last year, the science teachers from the schools that participate in the 4th Grade Mold Symposium got together and decided to add another symposium, this time for 3rd Grade students.  We decided that something that an invention theme would challenge the students and focus on creativity and engineering. The 3rd Grade Invention Symposium was born!  Teams of students will create inventions and present them in a science symposium that will be held in May 2015. After doing some research, LittleBits emerged as a great way to include electronics here at AFS. Our technology department gave LS science a generous grant to purchase the LittleBits for our project.

Want to know more about Little Bits?  Watch this terrific short video by the founder of LittleBits, Ayah Bdeir.

Third grade students have started to experiment with the LittleBits.  With a bit of practice, the students were quickly making all kinds of interesting circuits.

Students then shared their designs with other groups.  They explained how they set up their modules and what types of inventions they might be able to create with their circuits.

Next, the students make electrical diagrams of their circuits, complete with color coding.

An example of one of the creations!

4th Grade is not missing out!  They are making inventions with LittleBits as well. Stay tuned to see what the 4th grade will be making in a joint art and science (STEAM) project!
