Second Grade-Composition with Pot and Kettle Rhythm Bricks

Second grade worked on compositions using pictures of pots and kettles to represent rhythms they are reviewing-Pot=Ta (1/4 note) and Kettle=Titi (beamed 1/8 notes). We have been working on the chant, Bubble, Bubble, which uses these rhythms and the 1/4 rest (silence). Below is the chant:

Bubble said the kettle
Bubble said the pot
Bubble, bubble, bubble we are getting very hot!
Shall I take you off the fire?
No, you need not trouble
This is just the way we talk
Bubble, bubble, bubble!

Students created 4-beat rhythmic patterns using pot and kettle images and then extended them to 8-beat patterns. Later, we created a composition incorporating the chant.
