Author/Illustrator Angela Dominguez Visits Lower School this Month!

Angela Dominguez is visiting Lower School on Thursday, October 24th! In preparation for her visit students are reading and listening to books written and/or illustrated by Angela. Third grade is reading Stella Diaz Has Something to Say written and illustrated by Angela.  This book won the New York and Chicago Library Best Book of 2018, is an ALA Notable book, and it won the Sid Fleischman Award.  In the Author's Note of this fiction book, Angela Dominguez writes: How much is true? Well, if I had to say it's 82.0% true, to be exact.

Angela has created a character that is based on her childhood. She was born in Mexico and moved to this country as a small child. Just like Stella, she struggled with English and Spanish. She also had a best friend who was from Vietnam. Angela Dominguez wrote this book to share not just wonderful memories from her childhood but also the challenges. Just as Stella learns to be confident and stronger than she thinks she can be, she hopes the reader will see that they also can be strong and accomplish more than they think.

Our third grade students are thinking deeply about the characters, the main events, and the big ideas in this book. Last year, as second grade students, they explored her illustration in the Lola Levine series. During the spring they read Lola Levine and the Dream Vacation, illustrated by Angela.

Students in first and second grade are listening to the first book in the Lola Levine series, Lola Levine is Not Mean. Alicia is reading Angela's books that are written in Spanish and English to her classes. Our students will be well prepared for Angela's visit and am sure will have lots of questions about the craft of writing and illustrating to share with her. An order form for Angela's books was sent home in the student's backpack. All orders are due by Monday October 14th. Angela will sign books during her visit.  The following is a link to her website. https://www.angeladominguezbooks.com/.
