Our second grade students learned how to become "expert" birdwatchers when we began our unit about birds. Each student was equipped with a pair of binoculars, a bird tally sheet, and a bird identification booklet. Shortly after traveling outside and quietly stopping in different areas around campus, we came to the realization that on that day the birds weren't going to make it very easy for us to observe them (although many students' tally sheets indicate otherwise 😀). However, while outside they made many discoveries as we trekked around campus.
Our birdwatching adventure turned into an exciting nature walk full of unexpected finds. The students noticed and discussed spotted lantern flies, lichen and oddly textured bark on the trees, frogs by the creek, and old brick structures that were once hiding in the thicket of greenery that had recently been removed.
Although we did not see many birds, there were still a few lessons to take away from our experience. We learned that sometimes the best plans don't work out as expected, you can't control nature, even when you think you know a place you may not really know a place, and most importantly was to always seek the fun in what appears to be mundane.
