Kindergarten
Kindergarten is having lots of fun extending their study of the five senses into the science room. We've begun learning more about the sense of sight. We've learned about the parts of the eye and how the eyes help take pictures and send them to the brain. We're also learning how to assist people who are not able to see. Our students are presently practicing how to complete tasks without the sense of sight. Stay tuned for the blindfold pictures!
First Grade
Our first graders are currently learning how to identify and appreciate the differences between weeds and flowers. They have also taken a pledge to help save the monarch butterfly population by creating a safe habitat for them to flourish. In tune with the pledge, the first graders have planted milkweed and housed it in our science room greenhouse to watch it grow for later planting.
Second Grade
In science, second grade is preparing for their classroom study of birds by becoming more familiar with our local bird species and studying the anatomy of birds. Already, students have learned the names of and how to identify local bird species and become amateur birdwatchers. They all used their sharp eyesight, keen ears, and binoculars to observe robins, bluejays, goldfinches, sparrows, wrens, hawks, crows, and mourning doves.
Third Grade
Third grade is beginning the year with a journey through space. They are learning about the planets and the characteristics of each. They have done research and created planet boards that include their own made up planets. We will be moving forward with a study of the moon and its surface.
Fourth Grade
Our fourth grade students began the school year learning about science process skills and The Scientific Method. In teams they completed a salt and pepper challenge and learned a neat way to separate pepper from a mixture of salt and pepper. They are currently preparing for their trip to the shore with a study of sand and sea shells. They've all had an opportunity to explore the physical characteristics of sand and sea shells using a variety of scientific tools including microscopes, magnifying glasses, specimen boxes, tweezers, and magnets. The fourth graders will continue with a more extensive study of the properties of sands from around the world.
