Author Evelyn Coleman Visits Fourth Grade

The mystery novel Shadows on Society Hill, written by Evelyn Coleman, is a book fourth graders become thoroughly engrossed in reading and discussing in small book groups. This book is read in late winter through early spring and coincides with a study of abolition and life's challenges and opportunities during the time period after the Civil War. The family in this story has reunited in Philadelphia after beginning their lives as enslaved people in the South. We are so fortunate that Evelyn Coleman is speaking at the Rosenbach Museum about her book Freedom Train because it has enabled her to come and visit our 4th grade students!

The current exhibit at the Rosenbach Museum is about the historic Freedom Train that ran from 1947-1949. https://www.rosenbach.org/https://www.rosenbach.org/https://www.rosenbach.org/

Evelyn Coleman's historical fiction book tells the story through the eyes of a twelve year old boy when the Freedom Train arrives in Atlanta in 1949. The Rosenbach Museum is graciously offering us the afternoon of Friday Ocotober 14th for Evelyn Coleman to visit our fourth grade.

In preparation for her visit, the fourth grade will be listening and viewing James Earl Jones reading her picture book To Be A Drum and Amber Rose Tamblyn reading White Socks Only.

Students will discuss their reactions to the books and generate questions that we will email Evelyn Coleman in preparation for her Friday visit. We are also anticipating a continuing relationship with this amazing author and will have a discussion through Skype in the spring after finishing the mystery Shadows on Society Hill.
