A 'Tree'mendous Discovery!

Look how many!
Last Wednesday on our return walk from the Meetinghouse, the first graders were ecstatic to discover an abundance of horse chestnuts below the Horse Chestnut Tree!! They could not get over how many there were and wanted to collect as many as they possibly could.
The ground is covered with them!

They were filling their pockets, folding up their shirts and dresses to make baskets, and trying to carry just as many as they could.  One student rejoiced, "This is the best day of my life!!"  Others were pondering the spiky covering,  "Look, mine is just starting to hatch out its spiky shell!"  And another responded, "Look, I found one that hasn't hatched yet!"
Just getting started!
Stuffing our clothing!

In our bags!
In our pockets!
One is starting to hatch!!

You may have gotten a bag full to examine at home!  The children loved the texture of the smooth seed and also the pointy seed coat.  It would be great to spend time at home looking at them closely and hearing what other unique characteristics they notice.  Have fun!  Happy fall!
Look how many can be carried!
