First graders have been discussing settings. We explored the different settings in Marilyn's Monster
by Michelle Knudsen and compared these settings with those in The Curious Garden by Peter Brown. We discussed how setting can affect the story, and how the story may be different if the setting is changed.
We then read some Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willims and discovered that Elephant and Piggie stories almost never have any setting. This was something we needed to change. So the first grade quickly got to work creating the some very interesting spaces for Elephant and Piggie. From beaches to backyards, the students crafted detailed and colorful places for two of our favorite characters. Now, of course, it is time to start thinking a little harder about story characters. In the meantime, check out our amazing settings hanging in the Lower School Library windows!
