Second grade is in full on selfie mode! We spent the last couple of weeks exploring images and sharing what we see and what we think when we see the pictures. Quickly, we discovered that any one image could spark very different ideas and feelings in different viewers, even when viewed at the same time in the same space. The students easily understood that since everyone is different we don't see the same image, or bring the same life experience to the pictures. We then talked about how one picture can be perceived differently by multiple people with no wrong perceptions. This idea of holding multiple truths and allowing space for multiple truths is a concept that seems to come much easier to children.
To top off our study and transition into our next tech project, students worked with Photo Booth liberally exploring the effects to take numerous pictures of themselves both alone and with friends. The students will choose their favorite five, caption each photo and share it with PowerPoint. This will give students their first opportunity to create a slideshow and explore how to use the program. For now, the children are creating fun, silly photos and I am truly enjoying their joy.
