In connection to
their unit on letter writing to a family member or friend, the second graders have
learned the Spanish vocabulary that describes some members of a familia. To help kick off the learning,
we began each class time by reading a story that introduced us to some members
of a family.
vocabulary introduced:
familia – family
padres - parents
Mamá y Papá – Mom
and Dad
Madre y Padre –
Mother and Father
bebé - baby
hija y hijo –
Daughter and Son
hermana y hermano – Sister and Brother
abuela y abuelo – Grandmother and
Grandfather
nieta y nieto –
granddaughter and grandson
tío y tía – Uncle
and Aunt
prima y primo – (girl
and boy) cousins
perro de la familia – family dog
gato de la familia
– family cat
Afterwards, to
help reinforce the concepts, worksheets were provided that made connections
with verbal sound and its written word such as crossword puzzles, matching illustration
with word and word search activity sheets.
In addition, many fun
games were played such as matamoscas
(Fly Swatters), Bingo, and the all
time favorite Pulgar arriba (Thumbs-up).
At the beginning
of the school year, the second graders were invited to bring in a family photo.
To culminate the Familia unit, each
student was provided with a white pre-cut mat to mount their picture. Once framed,
the students were encouraged to write the familia
member name next to each person in their photo such as Mamá, Papá, hermano/a, abuelo/a, and so on. All frames are displayed outside the second
grade classrooms. Please stop by to marble at their amazing work.
¡Hasta la próxima!
