First Grade Strategic Readers

Reading with fluency and expression is a goal for the first grade students. Students begin to notice punctuation marks and whether or not a word is in bold print. Students read with partners and in small groups to help practice these skills. They also have a chance at intervals this year to read with Seamus, a certified therapy dog.  Heather, the mother of first grader Liam,  brought Seamus in after the first few weeks of school and students read their writing about a read aloud book to Seamus. This time around students read their books with a partner or small group to Seamus. Before he came in, they practiced reading to themselves with expression. Seamus loved listening to the students read! We can't wait until Seamus comes to visit first grade again this winter!

First grade students are learning a variety of reading strategies.  They shared with each other some of the strategies they are practicing such as strategies to decode challenging words. One student said he is learning to stretch out words and to tap out sounds and then to blend them back together. Another students said she looks to see if a word has an ending, and then covers up the ending to see if she can read the word first without the ending.  Another student suggested noticing if the word looks like another word they might know. Students also look at the picture and read to the end of the sentence and think about its meaning  to see if the word that comes to mind makes sense and looks like it could be the word.
