Second Grade Visits Maya Museum

Last Friday, the second graders were invited to visit the Mayan museum created by the sixth grade social studies classes of Mark Smith and Erin Timmer.  Their students researched, wrote about and made an "artifact " from this ancient civilization and shared them with us.  Before we went, the second grade students watched an introductory video to give them a bit of background knowledge.  They quickly discovered the connections to our own study of ancient Egypt!

The museum was set up in the Faulkner Reading Room and when we arrived, the students wandered from table to table, first trying to guess what the "artifact" was and then learning more about it from the sixth graders.  Some of the "artifacts" we found especially interesting were:

a spear used for hunting and war
dolls/ figures used to protect the dead
dish used for ashes

The second graders commented that they really enjoyed this fun  opportunity to learn from the sixth graders!
