Early Childhood-Musical Exploration and Extra-Musical Outcomes

Students enter the music room excited to begin their routine of exploring instruments laid out for them around the music room. A range of drums, percussion instruments, and xylophones are "open" for students to explore in whatever way they choose.

While many students explore playing with the instruments in the typical fashion or using the instruments in the way that they were "intended " to be used, some students are observed creating their own meaning through dramatic play.

Students create a "campfire" with shaker eggs and rhythm sticks.

Building the "fire".

Students use the wood blocks to create "binoculars".

When students have the opportunity to explore both musical and extra-musical ideas in music class, they make their own meaning and deeper meaning. Musical experiences are not only limited to musical skill and experiences but also, how music can tie into the lived experience of the child, both musical and beyond. Creating this deeper connection with the musical experience creates a greater accessibility fo students where they can "find themselves" in the music room and musical experience.
