Last Friday the second graders presented the winners of the Second Grade Book Awards. In the last few weeks, the students have worked in small groups deciding what makes one book better than another. The students all agreed this was somewhat a matter of opinion, but that there are books which almost all students really like.
What makes these books so special?
The students identified a category to explore, ranging from gross books to books about animals. They found three books within their topic and then began comparing the books. After a few minutes of initial conversation, and some arguing, the students realized they needed to have some objective way of evaluating the books. They then had to decide the best way to evaluate their particular topic. For instance, although funny books and gross books might incorporate images as part of the consideration, for gross books the images needed to be gross but that wasn't necessary for funny books.
The students had to demonstrate why the final book was the winner, based on the criteria they developed. The study culminates in an award show presented to the entire Lower School during assembly. Below is the slideshow that plays as the students share their category, nominations and winner. The first three books are the nominations followed on the next slide by the winner. Can you guess the categories?
