Kindergarten Sculptures and 1st Grade Painting in the Art Room

Our student artists are working in full swing in the art room, starting lots of different art explorations and trying their hands at new materials.

The kindergarten students have begun a unit on sculpture. During a classroom discussion when they looked at lots of examples, they learned that sculptures can big, small, made of different materials, but that sculptures are never flat. Using lines to create different shapes, they made cut paper mobile sculptures.

Then they moved on to working with clay. During their first class period, they had time to play with the clay, practicing rolling, squeezing and pounding the clay to create different forms. Now they have begun clay self-portraits, tying in different parts of their faces to the different senses which they have been studying in their classroom. They learned the special "scratch and attach" technique to secure pieces of clay together. Once their sculptures have dried, they will be fired in the kiln and glazed with colors to fully bring them to life.

The first graders are creating stunning Monarch butterfly wing costumes to
wear in the upcoming Halloween parade. Connecting their study of Monarch butterflies to their experience in the art room, they have cut and painted their own wings, mixing yellow and red paint to create orange. By painting one wing and folding the paper over and rubbing the other wing on top, they printed their paint to create symmetrical designs. We are looking forward to seeing their wings take flight during the Halloween parade!
