Fourth Grade Reports on European Encounters on the Shores of the Delaware River

The fourth grade has been discovering what occurred in Philadelphia when the Europeans first landed on the shores of the Delaware River in the 1600’s. The treatment of the Lenape by the Dutch and Swedes has been the subject of much conversation and debate. After viewing a film about the encounters and listening to a few books read aloud, the students were armed with facts and ideas of their own on how they would like to retell the story. After studying the Lenape this fall their loyalties were fierce. The discussion about the treatment of the Lenape and what ensued over the years is at the center of the student's films. Students had the choice to work alone or with a partner or two to make a film that would share their creativity and knowledge. Students wrote scripts together being sure to embed facts within them.  They then employed their artistic interpretation of events. Many of the films were shot in front of a green screen allowing students to be in different settings for their scenes. Each movie is as unique as the students making them. The movies are varied and their interests ranged from stop-motion animation, interpretive puppetry, a newscast with embedded re-enactments, live theater and some straight up news forums. The students are looking forward to the screening where they will get to watch and critique each other's  films. Popcorn is always in abundance in fourth grade at film screenings.
