Magnificent Math

The goal of math classes early in the year is to reorient ourselves as a class and as math learners.  In each grade, we have completed math activities and played math games that have helped us get to know each other further and review mathematical concepts from the previous year.

In first and second grade, the students worked on projects that gave them an opportunity to share information about themselves within the context of math.  The first grade completed "Numbers and Me" pages, and the second graders completed "Math about Me" pages.  Students in both grades came up with facts about themselves that included numbers or equations such as: "I have lost 4 teeth." or "The number of people in my family is 11-6."  The students' work will be up for Back to School night.

In third grade, we've played a variety of math games to help the students review addition and subtraction and regain speed and accuracy with these concepts.  The games have been lots of fun and have helped our new students get to know their classmates individually.  One game we played was called "Guess My Number," where each child had a number on their back and they had to ask yes or no questions to figure out the number.  They asked questions such as: "Is it an odd number?" and "Is there a three in the tens place?" to narrow down the possibilities.

In fourth grade, we started the year with a data collection and graphing activity.  The students chose a variable to study and picked between four and six values for that variable.  Next they surveyed each student in the class.  After collecting data, the students used an online tool to create graphs that communicated their findings.  Make sure to check out the fourth grade graphs, as well as all of the Lower School math work, at Back to School night!
