Abington Friends School Home and School Association Lower School

Welcome to the 2014-15 school year and the AFS Home & School Association!  Home & School is led by clerks representing every division of the school as well as special interest groups.  As a parent, you are automatically a member of Home & School and we encourage you to get involved by attending and/or volunteering at Home & School events. The Lower School clerks are planning a year of fun events, some old and some new. Please read this email in its entirety as it contains several important dates.

This year, in an attempt to not inundate your inbox, the Lower School Blog will include Home and School announcements, updates and a link to sign-up to volunteer. Please help us by checking the blog and responding timely to volunteer requests and RSVPs.  Without parent volunteers, none of our events would be possible.  So a big THANKS in advance for your volunteer participation! Below is a list of the events planned for the fall:

Room Parent Orientation - Thursday, Sept. 18 at 5:45 p.m. (Please note earlier start time.) Extended Day Room. Before Back to School Night, we will meet with adults interested in serving as a Room Parent.  Room Parents help teachers during the school year by organizing special snacks, communicating with families about events and volunteer needs, and responding to any special requests from the teachers.

Scarecrow Making Tradition - Thursday, October 9 from 3-5 p.m. outside the Muller

Cafeteria (FOR KINDERGARTEN & THIRD GRADE ONLY.)
This tradition is annual AFS activity for Kindergarten and Third Grade children and families. The children work in mixed-age groups with an adult volunteer to design unique scarecrows. The scarecrows are then displayed around the campus in time for the Halloween Parade. A service learning project is also planned. Look for a flyer with details and RSVP Form.

Solebury Orchards - Friday, October 10 12:30 p.m. School is closed for teacher in-service, so let’s meet for some outdoor fun at Solebury Orchards in New Hope. A wagon takes us to the apples where you can pick as much or little as you wish.

Fall Food Drive and Music Festival - Sunday, November 9 from 3-6 p.m. Muller Cafeteria
This is an afternoon of family fun! Leading up to the event, each grade is responsible for collecting specific food items. Students and their families participate in a service project, share a meal and, enjoy wonderful music performances from members of our school community.

Coffee and Conversation - Monthly, the clerks organize a casual gathering of parents in the morning during and following drop-off. This is a great time to meet other parents, learn more about AFS, and enjoy conversation.  Our first gathering will be Friday, September 26 from 8:00-9:00.  Held in the Lower School with exact location posted that morning.  Future dates:
