Monarchs, Maps and Mexico

First grade explores maps as they follow the migration of the Monarch Butterfly.

We have been reading The Travels of Monarch X which follows the migration of a monarch from Canada through the United States and into Mexico.

Monarch X has had many adventures along his journey. We just read about how he survived the Okefenokee Swamp on the boarder of Georgia and Florida. The students were fascinated with the diverse habitat that existed there.

Ask your first grader what dangers Monarch X faced and survived traveling through the swamp!

We have also been following the current migration of monarch butterflies on a site called Journey North. As we click on each week this fall, we can see the progression of their southward migration.

We have enjoyed puzzles, our curriculum on Atlases, and watched a BrainPop, Jr. video on reading maps where we learned about map keys and the compass rose. We have explored actual maps where we shared what we know and what we wonder, and we will make our own maps identifying the countries Monarch X traveled during his migration.

Soon Monarch X will be traveling into Mexico, and we look forward to exploring the people and culture he will encounter while there!

Alicia has connected her curriculum to our study of Monarchs, Maps and Mexico!

Here is a link to a wonderful video we watched about the Monarch's fascinating journey you may want to watch with your first grader.
