In connection with their homeroom curricular study, the
second graders’ “Bird Study” continues to soar during
their Spanish language experience. We have been learning the Spanish words that
describe the anatomy of a bird and have been playing games that provide opportunities
for students to examine the content in lively and enjoyable ways.
For starters,
we read storybooks and observed short videos that introduced us to a variety of
bird species. A video enjoyed by all was TuBebeGenio.blogspot.com
on YouTube. This brief clip acquainted us with the Spanish names for some
lovely feathered creatures and the sound they make.

A fun game second graders requested to play over and over
again is el juego de los matamoscas
(the Swatter Game). This is an effective learning activity for all types of
learners that engages and reinforces new vocabulary. The kinesthetic and
tactile learner is stimulated with the physical activity of swatting the
flashcard while the auditory learner is engaged with the sound of the
vocabulary being called out in a musical tune (as music helps with retention
and enhances learning!). We first played using flashcards that have the illustration.
Then, to integrate listening, speaking and reading, we played with cards that
only have the written word.
Another amusing learning tool the second graders have enjoyed
taking part in is Pulgar arriba
(Thumbs-Up). This is another favorite where the students get to showcase their
amazing recall ability by connecting the verbal sound to the illustration on
the flashcard. And, when using the flashcards with the written word instead of
the photo, the students get the chance to practice their beginning Spanish reading
skills.
To further provoke the visual learner and offer entry to
learning for all, additional activities were provided where they
enjoyed seeing, reading and labeling the parts of the bird.
In their homeroom, each second grader has chosen a bird they
wish to research in depth. To culminate their study in Spanish class, the
second graders will be invited to draw their chosen bird and label its parts in
Spanish. The finished product will be displayed along with their classroom
poster. Make sure to ask your second grader what the following words translates
in English. You too will be amazed!
alas
cabeza
cola
cuello
ojos
patas
pico
piernas
plumas
Cariños,
Alicia
