Fourth Grade Delves into Slavery and Abolition

The fourth grade has been studying the abolition of slavery and have been curious about how slavery came about in this country, how enslaved people were treated and how they made their way to freedom. The students created lists of what they thought they knew and what they wanted to know. We have been researching and then discussing many of the answers to their questions. The students are in the process of researching a person or topic regarding slavery and abolition.

We had a visit this week from Dr. Daisy Century, a historical interpreter, who performed for the fourth grade as Harriet Tubman in the meeting house this week. Dr. Century's skill as a performer had the students enthralled with the life story of Harriet Tubman. With the putting on of a hat or the removal of a jacket, Dr. Century was able to shift seamlessly from a ten year old, to a teenager, to a union army spy.

At the close of her performance Dr. Century shared props and other facts from the period and took questions from the students. The students were most interested in her life as a child and their questions reflected that. She ended her time with the students with teaching them bird calls that were thought to be used by people on the Underground Railroad as means of communication.
