First graders loved listening to the book Commander in Cheese: The Big Move by Lindsey Leavitt. We read an advanced reader's copy. This book will be on sale this summer. Throughout the reading of this chapter book, students used comprehension strategies such as envisionment - creating pictures in one's mind, and making text connections. We also did a lot of thinking about the personality of the characters and how you can tell their traits from the book, and we worked on predicting, and determining the meaning of sophisticated vocabulary. Students acted out the emotions of characters, helped to read dramatic words and shared with partners predictions about what might happen in the next chapter.
Upon finishing the book, students wrote a review. In order to do this, they thought about what part of book they enjoyed the best and what they would like the author and the publisher to know. We then copied their reviews to keep in their writing folders, and sent the originals to the publisher to be shared with the author.
