Literacy Specialist in Kindergarten

Our amazing Lower School Literacy Specialist, Ann BB, recently visited our classroom to share a reading of The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss.  Ann is a master reader of picture looks, and she has the students notice letters and words, infer emotions of characters, make predictions,  make text to self connections, and act out parts of the story.  After she read the story, the children were given copies of the book to partner read.  Ann gave them all stickies with hearts on them for the students to find a page in the book where they experienced a good feeling from the story.  Then they came back to the group and took turns sharing the pages where they choose to place their heart stickies.  This activity will be followed up y another visit from Ann where she will reread the story and the students will work in small groups to write a response to the book.  A wide range of literacy skills are developed in fun and developmentally appropriate ways during these visits from Ann.  Some these skills include, developing phonemic awareness, recognizing sight words, decoding, listening comprehension, letter formation, fine motor skills, and story sequencing.  Her visits also prepare them for the work they will do in first grade with Ann during Reading Workshop.  Here are some photos from her recent visit.
