Kindergarten Plays

We recently took a trip to the Arden Theater in Philadelphia and watched their production of The Snow Queen. When we returned to school, we informed the children that we will be writing and performing a play for their parents and the Lower School community. We told them that our kindergarten class will come up with an idea for the play, and then we will create, practice, and perform the play on the big stage.

There are many things to consider during this project. First we must generate ideas on what our play will be about, and then we must agree on what will happen in the plot. This requires that children use their imaginations, communicate their ideas effectively, and collaborate and compromise to create a collective vision. We will need to figure out who the characters are and the costumes they might need. Then we have to figure out the lines that each character will say.

As we engage in this process, the excitement is palpable. A high level of cooperation is required to move through this process in a way that is fun and effective. A sense of team unity and pride emerges. Speaking and listening skills are practiced, and our understanding of story elements and story sequencing deepen. We are gaining momentum on our way to the production, and we will cap It off with a cast party after the performance. The children were deeply inspired by the production of The Snow Queen. Here are a few photos. One can easily see the mesmerized looks on their faces.
