Drawing Students Into the New School Year in the Art Room

The Lower School art students have been eager to get to work in the art room this year. We have begun with an introduction to drawing basics. Drawing skills create a strong foundation for all art and design activities.

The students are learning the routines of entering the art studio, how to care for materials, work independently and to cooperatively clean up their work and space.

The young artists have been working in drawing centers to create their artwork, beginning the artistic process by selecting their drawing tools, noticing and exploring the differences between materials such as pencil, ink, oil pastel, crayon and marker.

As an introductory activity, classes have brainstormed about how artists get their ideas. Some of their insightful answers include: emotions, instincts, other artists, imagination, culture and observation. Students are using source materials such as books, picture cards and still-life objects to help inspire and inform their drawings.

Giving young artists options in their artwork helps them to strengthen self-regulation, learn how to plan out an idea, make predictions about future outcomes and be flexible when problem-solving.
