Third Grade gets a lesson in Mridangam (South Indian Classical Drum)

Third graders got a real treat this week in music class when classmate Rudy, shared his mridangam with the class. Rudy has been studying the South Indian classical instrument since he was four years old and shared with us that he practices daily for a whole hour!

Indian Classical music is a beautiful and very complex and intricate musical tradition. It takes many, many years to become proficient in any musical instrument or singing in the tradition. Some of you may be more familiar with the North Indian instrument the tabla. Where the tabla is two durms of different sizes tuned to different pitches, the mridangam is one drum, which has two ends that are of different sizes.

Students were very impressed with Rudy's speed and agility on the instruments. We could tell that his practicing is really paying off!

Shine to you, Rudy! We are so proud of you:)

Enjoy!
