First graders may have come back to frigid temperatures but their hearts were warm, and they were ready to work! We started class by reading two really wonderful books. We read The New Small Person by Lauren Child and I Slightly Want to Go Home also by Lauren Child. Maybe a few students did slightly want to go home, but we realized as the class went on that being in school was okay too. Then we brainstormed some events we are looking forward to.
After some discussion, we realized there are a lot of exciting times in our future. We decided to turn these events into book covers. Students filled in titles, authors and illustrators as well as call numbers. As always when writing in class, we encourage our students to use kid writing, as sounding out the word and finding the letters supports their reading.
Creating book covers gave the students the chance to review what we learned about parts of the book in the fall. This also gave the teachers a way of reconnecting with our first graders as we learn more about what makes them happy and what is happening in their world. Some students are looking forward to imminent events such as playdates, birthdays and gymnastics classes. Others are peering deeper into the future, thinking about upcoming trips or just springtime. At least one of our first graders is waiting on a new baby! There are exciting days coming for all!
