Abington Friends School will once again honor the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by hosting a “King Day of Service” on Monday, January 15. You can register here to volunteer to help with one of 21 service projects that will help build community and assist the homeless, the elderly or those who are ill.
Last year, 600 volunteers took part in the “King Day of Service” at AFS, which over the years has become one of the largest project hubs in the Philadelphia suburbs for this national day of service. “When people gather to work together, to get to know one another and do so in the spirit of community and care for others, the impact of a day of service is magnified,” said Lower School Director Andrea Emmons, who directs the event. “When we honor the life and work of Dr. King, we are lifting up the ideal of who we can be as a community and as a nation. A Day of Service is a way of actively working toward that ideal.”
On the School’s campus on January 15, volunteers are invited to create fleece blankets, hats and scarves; assemble dinners; bake bread, decorate cookies and much more. A beloved project that is a cherished tradition of AFS second graders, teddy bear making, will return this year.
Volunteers can also sign up to go off campus to help with arts, crafts and games at local retirement communities or to make casseroles at home.
AFS partners with several local organizations, including the Breathing Room Foundation, Whosoever Gospel Mission, Mitvah Circle, and the Women’s Center of Montgomery County, in offering the service projects. AFS also joins with McKinley Elementary School and A Step Up Academy in sponsoring the day’s events.
The public is invited to participate in the service projects, and all ages are welcome. Invite friends and family to register as well!
The clothing and book sale will be held in the Lower School from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, January 13, as well as from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the Day of Service, Monday, January 15. Donations of gently used clothing — women’s, men’s, children’s and maternity wear — are needed for the sale. Please leave bags of donated clothing for the sale in the Lower School lobby. Proceeds from the sale are donated to the Montgomery County Women’s Center’s domestic- violence prevention program.
