Unidad de restaurante en el cuarto grado / Restaurant Unit in fourth grade

There are times when a particular theme of study goes so well with students that it necessitates a “do-over.” A major interest in comida (food) brewed a study in the fourth grade Spanish class a few years back. The study was so well enjoyed that the rising grades shared their anticipation for their “turn” to take part. Therefore, it made perfect sense to make this unit a tradition for all fourth graders and so the planning has commenced with the 2017 class.

Activities are being provided in a variety of formats that will help introduce and reinforce some of the students’ favorite foods that include frutas (fruits), vegetales (vegetables), postres (desserts) and bebidas (drinks). Give it a try and see how many you know:

papitas fritas
perro caliente
hamburguesa
pollo frito
queso

fresas
uvas

judías verde
zanahorias

pastelito
galletas dulce
helado

leche de chocolate
jugo de mango

After we finish the study on food related vocabulary, the fourth graders will present their new knowledge by delving into a Restaurante unit. Their curiosity will take us through a new journey that will include additional fun activities, which will lead to the practice of communicative skills in a restaurant setting. In addition to vocally practicing restaurant related words, this long-term project will provide ample opportunities for the students to practice their written skills as well.

The culminating activity will be a restaurante simulation. Each individual, pair or team of “restaurant owners” will design their establishment by giving it a name, creating the menú along with cost of items, and will serve as cooks, greeters, and wait staff. Some may even add to their ambience an entertainment piece by having dancers or Spanish music playing in the background. The fourth graders are very excited! The planning and designing will begin soon! Stay tuned as we eagerly await the debut of these fine dining eateries.
