Conversation about a good book with friends is a great way to start the day! Tuesday December 1, was the second meeting this year of the Lower School Book Club for Adults. Coffee, tea, scones, yogurt and granola were enjoyed by all. The combination of a great book and food is always one of life's pleasures. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel was the book discussed, and conversation was lively and thought provoking. The premise of this book is that a virus has wiped out 99% of the world's population. The author reveals that art survives as she focuses on a symphonic and theater troupe traveling through the Midwest sharing their art and forming friendships and family bonds in the process. Each of us shared what would be the one thing that we would bring with us if we were in the same situation as the characters in the story and what would be important for us to carry on in this new life.
We are always excited to have new members of the community join us. The next book to be discussed is The Visionist by Rachel Urquhart on Tuesday morning January 26, 2016 from 8-9in the Lower School library. This book is set in a Massachusetts farming community in the 19th century. Polly, a young teenager, and her little brother come to live in the Shaker community after Polly finds a way for them to escape their brutal father. The Shaker community in all of its complexities comes alive for the reader. The book examines the themes of faith, resilience, shame and forgiveness. New York Times book critic Amber Dermont writes," The Visionist reveals there is a power to being mysterious, but there is an even greater gift to being known, which at its heart is simply another way of being loved."
