In a shape exploration, we tried to close different types of lines to get different types of shapes. Curvy lines made circles. Straight lines made rectangles. Diagonal lines made triangles. When we closed squiggly line we found that we had created a shape that we didn't have a name for and then we learned to call them organic shapes. Using our new shape-drawing skills, we drew, cut and glued construction paper shapes to create a beautiful hanging mobile in the art room.

Lastly, the kindergarteners looked at the artwork of Piet Mondrian and learned about straight lines that are vertical and horizontal. After learning that Mondrian was inspired by jazz music, the kindergarteners "danced" their lines while listening to music, and "froze" their lines and glued them in place when the music stopped. They were delighted to discover squares, rectangles and more shapes on their papers, which they then painted using primary colors.
