Today we joyfully welcomed the snow and first and second grades had the opportunity to try their hand at tapping the maples.!They also learned about estimating the age of the tree and in between frolicked in the snow.
Welcome to the Abington Friends Lower School blog! We invite you to learn more about what students are studying, find information about special events, and explore links to community activities that connect to life in Lower School.

Maple Tree Tapping - Outdoor Education
Today we had a very special first on the AFS campus, Lower School students in third and fourth grades learned about tapping maple trees to gather sap for syrup. As we continue to expand outdoor learning opportunities, there have been so many exciting new adventures.
Over the next month or so LS scientists in all grades will be involved in the tapping of our maple trees that will be happening in partnership with Oak Lane Maple. We are particularly excited about sap gathering as many of us hope there will be a sweet reward at the end of our work. Next week the rest of the Lower School will also be learning to drill holes, install taps and determine the age of the large trees on the front circle. This project is being done in partnership with Upper School and is an incredible learning experience!
